In my opinion, Kickstarter has the absolute best weekly e-mails. This project involves notebooks for keeping score in baseball, which is something Matt always does and I am trying to learn to do.

On a baseball-related side note, Matt told me last week that Garrett’s Popcorn is opening a new store at U.S. Cellular Field, which means two of my great loves will be officially combined this summer.

Support baseball and excellent graphic design.

Hello. I am currently teaching an elective class titled, “The Literature of Sport.” I am teaching this class to some fairly elite high school athletes, from soccer players to golf prodigies. Suffice it to say, I know very little about sport, though I did grow up in the same neighborhood as many of the San Francisco Giants players of the late ’80s. I was Will Clark’s papergirl! He had a floor to ceiling aquarium built into his foyer! But I digress. I have immersed myself in “Friday Night Lights” (Clear eyes! Full hearts! Can’t lose!) and The Best American Sports Writing of the Century anthology. I am actually and verifiably becoming interested in sports. I would like to access Tumblr’s hive mind to compile some excellent sports writing essays/fiction around the following ideas:

1) Sports Writing as Narrative

2) Sports Writing as Social Commentary

3) Sports Writing as Myth, Metaphor, and Transformation

In the spirit of sharing, here are some great pieces of writing I’ve come across:

The Enlightened Man by Jeanne Marie Laskas

What Do You Think of Ted Williams Now? by Richard Ben Cramer

Shadow Boxing by Wright Thompson

Offensive Play by Malcolm Gladwell

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines by Andrew Sean Greer

Dreams, Steroids, Death by Mark Fainaru-Wada

The No-Stats All-Star by Michael Lewis

(img via) We are back from a long winter (and an even longer hiatus at this blog) and spring is in the air. Those boys go to spring training next week and baseball can take over its rightful place on the throne of America’s favorite sport (bye bye, football). So who wants to play fantasy baseball? A show of hands? If you have any questions or are interested in playing, reply here or email us at curvesball@gmail.com.
So your team didn’t make it the playoffs. Mine either. As I believe Fitzgerald once referred to “the dark hour of the soul”, this can be a baseball fan’s dark hour. Your team isn’t in contention. Or your team made it to the playoffs! But then it ran into the damn Phillies or the man with the golden arm, Cliff Lee. This is a tough time to be a fan if you’re not the Yankees, Phillies, Giants, or Rangers.

So what do you do? Do you jump enemy lines and root for another team? How do you even choose another team after 162 games of cheering and yelling at your tv screen and drowning your sorrows in pre, during, and post game alcohol choices? Are you disloyal for suddenly jumping on ship with the Yankees and hoping that there’s a repeat of last year just so they kill the Phillies? Or do you wish the Rangers the best even though you’re still bitter that after a few Golden Sombreros in April, you dropped Josh Hamilton from your fantasy team and then he became a sober wunderkind and your boyfriend beat you in fantasy baseball? No, you’re not bitter at all.

This is the time when we put aside our alliances and we watch good, solid, postseason baseball. You don’t have to find a new alliance or root for anyone if you don’t want to, I know how fragile egos can be after watching your team not make the cut. Just watch what we all love to begin with: the actual game of baseball. In the postseason, it’s even more dramatic and sometimes poetic. Finish your beer, put aside your anger at this season, pray for some moves in the offseason for your team, and play ball.

mattandmikelovebaseball:

This is a whispery post because I sort of can’t believe I’m saying this, as a Phillies fan, but you know what? Dodgers fans are not nice!* Leaving last night’s game, I was walking behind a portly gentleman in a Phils shirt and cap who was alone and minding his own business when a rejected Entourage extra got right in his face and shouted, ‘Not tonight, Phillies, you fat fuck!’ And then pointed and laughed. THAT IS NOT NICE, YOU GUYS. It’s OK with me to throw baseballs back and yell awful, unprintable things at teams and managers and coaches themselves (it’s not OK to pour beer on heads, though), but can we agree that unless someone is directly, personally fighting with you that it’s probably a good idea to not be an asshole and let people of any size walk out the stadium in peace, or at least not hurl weight (or race, or gender, or any other kind) related insults at them? Please?

*Not all Dodgers fans, obviously. It just sounded better that way.

I admit that as a Mets fan I wrinkled my nose at the knowledge that this is written by a Phillies fan but I do agree with the rest of the post. Let’s keep it classy at the ballpark, people.

Fantasy Basketball anyone?

girlperson:

As suggested by someone who left a comment in my Ask box, I’m going to do a Buster Posey signed baseball giveaway.

I recently found two signed Buster Posey Official Major League Baseballs in my closet while cleaning my room. I got them signed at a San Jose Giants game last season.

One of them could be yours.

Here’s how it’s going to work. Re-blog this post and follow me (if you don’t already) for a chance to win the ball. Since it’s the 28th, I’ll end this one month from now on September 28th (Buster Posey’s number!). I’ll compile a list of everybody that has re-blogged and followed me and I’ll randomly choose a winner using a random number generator. If there are a lot of people that do this, I might give away the second ball too.

Just to get this going, I will give a random Buster Posey rookie card as well to those that re-blog and follow until supplies last. Hit me up with your contact info so that I can mail you the card.

Thanks and good luck!

In their 1963 yearbook, the New York Mets ran this introduction to Mr. Met. Via Uni Watch:

Like a new baby “Mr. Met” must learn to crawl before he can walk and run. As this season progresses and in the years ahead, “Mr. Met” will appear in hundreds of different poses and will be an integral part of our new scoreboard at Shea Stadium. Their will be all types of “Mr. Met” merchandise, some of which will be available here at the ball park; many other items will be sold in department and variety stores.
